Serious Injury and Fatality Prevention (SIF) Module
Seeing SIF related hazards and precursors more completely
Seeing The Precursors:
Tools For Serious Injury & Fatality Prevention
Over the last decade many organizations have been placing more of a focus on Serious Injury and Fatality prevention (SIF). The theory behind the traditional ‘Safety Pyramid’ (or Heinrich Safety Triangle) says that if we reduce incidents at the ‘base’ of the pyramid, it follows that we will reduce incidents at the top of the pyramid at an approximately proportional rate. The current theory behind SIF prevention holds that this is not actually the case. In fact, the rate of Serious Injuries and Fatalities over the past number of years have, and continue to be, plateaued or leveled-off.
The systems that we are establishing to reduce or eliminate minor injuries at the base of the pyramid are necessary, but not sufficient to experience improvement at the top of the pyramid. To improve SIF prevention, we need to integrate new and different approaches. Utilizing Visual Literacy methodologies, COVE has developed a process that can help improve our ability to not only see SIF related hazards and precursors more completely but can also help us interpret SIF potential more accurately.
This module helps ‘connect the dots’ between Serious Injury and Fatality prevention and Visual Literacy. We present some common approaches to SIF and pay particular attention to those that have direct links with the practice of Visual Literacy.
Program Overview
In this module, participants will ‘Connect the dots’ between key principles and approaches associated with Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention and the primary concepts associated with Visual Literacy. Exploring how the integration of Visual Literacy into an organization’s SIF program can improve the program’s effectiveness and help prevent SIFs in real-time.
Participants will:
- Look at common approaches currently being applied to SIF prevention
- Review Visual Literacy principles and methodologies
- Practice applying Visual Literacy tools like Elements of Art and Seeing the Whole PICTURE™ to identifying specific targeted visual cues in the workplace to spot precursor scenarios
- Identify ‘direct and indirect’ linkages and contributions
MODULE Specifications
- Facilitator guide
- Presentation deck
- Participant workbooks
- Accompanying exercises
MODULE INCLUDES:
- Approximately 4 hours in length
- Inclusive under the license agreement
- Train-the-Trainer facilitated
